The Auction house allows you to acquire property cards. It will present both new properties that have not been open for business yet, as well as upgrade tokens for properties that you already own. The purpose of buying new properties is of course to increase your real estate options, while upgrade tokens are the way to go to increase the max rent, allowing you to collect more monopoly money each time you come back to the game.
